Gossan. Nocturnos

Joan Fontcuberta

The photographs in this book were taken by Joan Fontcuberta in the Gossan reservoir (Minas de Riotinto, Huelva, Spain) during the autumn of 2017, the year with less rainfall of the last decades in Spain. The drought caused the water level to drop significantly after the summer and some of the trees that had remained flooded were exposed. Once it raised again, this unique perishable and unrepeatable environment was once again hidden under the lagoon.

Joan Fontcuberta was responsible for the first campaign to promote the future GOSSAN theme park: MISSION TO MARS, a commission from the Huelva Provincial Council, in collaboration with the Chinese multinational Galaxy Entertainment, which was first presented in February 2018 during the ARCOMadrid International Fair. Some of these images were also used to promote the Huelva mining basin at FITUR 2018, the most important tourist event in Spain.

Mr. Xuan Penkuan, president of Galaxy Entertainment, liked these mysterious night images of Riotinto so much that he came up with the idea of organizing a literary contest amazed at “the strange beauty of this unparalleled and incomparable red landscape in the world” (sic). The writer Miguel Ángel Hernández has been the winner of this first edition with his story 'The return'.

In this book, Joan Fontcuberta's photographs dialogue with a selection of images of the surface of Mars obtained by the HiRISE (High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment) camera.
